Nov 2, 2019 · My question is why are people ok doing a .338 Norma mag same dia as the lapua as far as bolt face. Running same safe pressures. I've found multiple builders say no you shouldn't on the lapua but say ya perfectly fine for a Norma. All things equal like .338 300gr pill both loaded to say 65,000 safe pressure why is one ok and not the other. From the little i know the 300 WM will be very close to the 338 Lapua down range. How it actually performs though is another thing. According to the thread the .338 Norma Magnum with a COAL of 3.6" can better the .338 Lapua Magnum (provided the COAL is 3.6") with less powder, indicating a more efficient design. In all aspects of the case proportions, the .50 BMG is much larger than the .338, which is a big round when compared to other popular hunting /shooting rounds. From what little testing I've done so far, I don't believe N-570 will give the same speeds as Retumbo and it seems to fill the case more. 93grs N-570 seems about the same as 95 grs Retumbo pressure wise and also seems to fill the case a little more.The 300 is 10" less wind for a full value 10 mph wind. Drop is a win for the 300 with 129" less drop. The both go subsonic in the 1900 range so thats a wash but even there the 338 only hold about the same 120-150 energy lead all others in the 300 favor. I like that the 338 norma has a better barrel life and less wind drift.
