I'm using Remington STS #8 2-3/4" ammo and the friction ring is set for light loads. When cycling manually it works beautifully, so the ejector is obviously functioning, but the bolt isn't coming back far enough ...

As others have told you, the gun may be dirty, need lubrication, or have the friction pieces adjusted. Usually an Auto-5 with those problems will still cycle stout hunting loads. No the gun does not need to be taken down. It does need some cleaning of the mag tube though. Pull the keeper out of the mag tube being carefull of the spring tension. swab the tube out real good, make sure the follower is slipping nice and free the length of the tube, put a little lube on it and reassemble.
