Only way to keep the light off is to replace it. As u/oldslim pointed out, the second (downstream) O2 sensor is used by the ECU to determine if the catalytic converter is working at full efficiency. If the ECU judges the efficiency to have fallen below an acceptable threshold, the P0420 code is the result.
